The thought of islands almost always conjures up images of impeccable beaches, bright flowers and lush rainforests.

In the new book “The 10 Best of Everything,” National Geographic combed the globe’s maritime locations, compiling a list of the world’s 10 best islands, showing that the shores of the U.K. can hold their own against the likes of Thailand and Polynesia.

What makes a job dangerous and potentially fatal? It can be any number of factors, including the type of work and where it’s performed. This week, the FBI announced that violent crime dropped 4 percent in 2011, compared to a 5.5 percent drop in 2010. Nationally, the murder rate fell 1.9 percent from 2010, and robbery, forcible rape and assault fell 4 percent each.
