Around 75%–80% of Iraq’s population is Arab; the other major ethnic groups are the Kurds at 15%–20%, the Assyrians, the Iraqi Turkmen and others (5%), who mostly live in the north and northeast of the country. Around 20,000 Marsh Arabs live in southern Iraq. The Iraqi population includes a community of around 30,000 Circassians, 20,000 Armenians, and a community of 2500 Chechens. In southern Iraq there is a community of Iraqis of African descent, a legacy of the slavery practiced in the Islamic Caliphate beginning before the Zanj Rebellion of the 9th century, and Basra’s role as a key port.

Population figures are often estimated in the Middle East, especially when it comes to ethnic or sectarian numbers. The last census that recorded ethnic and sectarian statistics was conducted in 1957.
In that census Kurds were determined to be 25% of the population, Shiites 45%, Sunni Arabs 15%. Christians (including Arabs) 10%, and the remainder 5% were Turkomen, Yezidis, Persians.
Considering the genocidal activities of the various Arab-Nationalist regimes, which resulted in mass killings of Kurds (hundreds of thousands), mass exodus, the number of kurds may have dropped considerably. However, high birthrate among Kurds coupled with the repatriation have for the most part stabilized the percentage of Kurds in Iraq. David McDowall estimates the population of Kurds in Iraq to be 23% not 15-20% The latter number is propagted by the Baathist regime to undermine Kurdish demands and aspirations.
