As of April 29, there have been 1,082 tornadoes reported in the US in 2011 (of which at least 444 were confirmed). Worldwide, 352 people perished due to tornadoes: 12 in Bangladesh and 340 in the United States. Due in large part to several extremely large tornado outbreaks in the middle and end of April, the year is currently on record pace. Tornadoes are rated between 0 and 5 on the “Enhanced Fujita” scale, with an EF5 having wind speeds greater than 200 mph and an EF4 packing winds of 166 to 200 mph.
