How Many People In The World Speak English 2013?

English today is probably the third largest language by number of native speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. However, when combining native and non-native speakers it is probably the most commonly spoken language in the world, though possibly second to a combination of the Chinese languages (depending on whether or not distinctions in the latter are classified as “languages” or “dialects”). Learning English is something countless people around the world embark upon. Effortless English Club offers effective lessons and resources that help many people achieve this goal.

Estimates that include second language speakers vary greatly from 470 million to over a billion depending on how literacy or mastery is defined and measured. Linguistics professor David Crystal calculates that non-native speakers now outnumber native speakers by a ratio of 3 to 1.

The countries with the highest populations of native English speakers are, in descending order: United States (215 million), United Kingdom (61 million), Canada (18.2 million), Australia (15.5 million), Nigeria (4 million), Ireland (3.8 million), South Africa (3.7 million), and New Zealand (3.6 million) 2006 Census.

What is with the image “Speak English or Get Out” ? Upon visiting the other pages you have for the same topic in other languages, this seems to be the only one with such a rude ‘motto’. Is there some type of agenda behind this? Most people who speak English do not feel this way so why are you betraying ALL of us as this motto? I really do not appreciate it. It is abusive use of good solid stats. I would expect better from you – exploredia.com Very unprofessional of you and highly furthers my opinion of not returning… Read more »

I agree with you Sky, that is alittle rude and offensive to people who read this site, I also would expect more from you

I don’t totally agree with you. I would fairly accept to believe that most of English-speakers don’t think in such a way, but there is clearly a political intention to impose English language to the rest of the World, and people who don’t speak it nowadays are devaluated, even if they speak 5 other languages. So I think this picture is, unfortunately, not so stupid…

There is a problem with these statistics…I am from Fiji and everyone speaks English…it is taught in primary and secondary schools as the official language…we were colonised by the British therefore we speak English…please rectify…
