Mont Blanc, which makes luxury leather, writing instruments and watches, produces this royal pen featuring a barrel made of 18 karats white gold. It’s also encrusted with 1,430 brilliant-cut diamonds and an 18 karat gold nib. A paramount-cut diamond makes up the clip ring and 19 diamonds make up the Mont Blanc star logo. The cost of these most expensive pens? $174,000.
9. Caran d’Ache ‘1010’ Fountain Pen
This Switzerland-made pen joins other luxury writing instruments made by luxury manufacturer Caran d’Ache. It’s crafted in 18 karat gold with a ruby and a diamond. The transparent barrel has sapphire crystals. There were only 10 of these pens manufactured. You can get one for $174,000.
8. Limited Edition Boheme Papillon Pen
Another luxury Mont Blanc designed pen, this set features six pens inspired by butterflies. Three of the pens are made with solid yellow, white and rose gold along with 1,402 Wesselton diamonds in each. There are also 37 sparkling sapphires and a Mont Blanc diamond on the cap. The other three feature 840 flawless diamonds, 591 sapphires, and different colors depending on the shades of ink they carry. Each pen costs $230,410.
7. Mont Blanc Prince Rainier III Limited Edition 81 Pen
Mont Blanc pays its respects to Monaco’s late Prince Rainier III of Monaco who died in 2005. The nib is made of 18 karat gold. There’s 19 rubies in the clip ring and 996 facet-cut diamonds and 92 rubies encrusted in a pen molded from 18 karat gold. Its cost is $260,200.
6. Caran d’Ache La Modernista Diamond Pen
Caran d’Ache returns to the most expensive pens list with its La Modernista, made by hand by the manufacturer. The process took six months, making it a labor of love. And love’s not all that goes into it. Try 5,072 diamonds weighing 30 karats encrusting the pen. Eighteen karat gold coated with rhodium makes up its nib while the pen also features 96 rubies. It took master jeweler Robert Perron six months to complete this pen. Its price tag comes in at $275,000. The pen honors Modernist architect Antonio Gaudi.
5. Caran d’Ache Gothica Pen
With 1,140 pens made, there’s a better chance to get the Swiss manufacturer’s Gotica Pen. The catch is it will cost you $406,453. These most expensive pens were first sold in China in 2006. They pay tribute to Gothic art with a body and a cap made of six-sided rhodium-sterling silver. Each side looks like a gothic window of fleur de lis and rosette crafted in brilliant colors.

Mont Blanc and Van Cleef & Arpels, a manufacturer of high-quality jewelry, teamed up on these limited editions most expensive pens to celebrate their hundredth anniversaries. Topping the list is a pen by Florence, Italy pen designer Tibaldi. That’s mathematical in more than one way. The pen’s ratio, when closed, corresponds to its barrel by a ratio of 1:1.1618 also known as Phi. There’re only one of these pens made. What makes the price astronomical? Its 123 rubies and 945 black diamonds. The pen sold at a Shanghai auction for $9 million in 2010.
